Environment

Shrimp farming, while potentially hazardous to the environment, may be approached in
a natural, extensive manner, to limit negative impact.

Mangroves
In the early 1990's, many mangroves were burned throughout the world in order to
clear the land for shrimp farming.  Farmers were severely penalized after many
lobbying groups like Greenpeace pressured foreign governments to institute harsh
penalties for mangrove destruction.  In addition, mangrove burning proved disastrous to
shrimp farms in other ways, as seawalls and berms eroded into the sea from the lack of
the mangrove's supportive root structure.  Today, mangrove burning is very rare, as
farmers better recognize the short and long-term penalties of mangrove destruction.

Environmental Management
Environmental management of shrimp farms is very important, keeping equipment and
fuel separate from the growing mediums - soil, water, and air.  If any of these mediums
become contaminated, it can be disastrous for shrimp crops.  While this knowledge has
led many of the larger producers to adopt very environmentally-responsible business
practices, just as many producers who are ignorant of these practices are still operating.

Our Stand
Natural Select is committed to responsible farming and harvesting of all seafood.  We
understand the long-term viability of Ecuador's fisheries, and the importance of
maintaining the natural habitat of coastline lands.
